How it works
A percent-off sale takes a percentage off the original price. A 25% off sale removes one quarter of the price; a 50% off sale removes half; a 10% off sale removes one tenth. The calculation has two steps: first find the dollar amount you save, then subtract it from the original price to get the sale price.
For example, with a $80 item at 25% off: the savings are $80 × 0.25 = $20.00, and the sale price is $80.00 − $20.00 = $60.00. The same steps work for any numbers: a $120 jacket at 30% off saves $36.00 and costs $84.00, and a $45 shirt at 20% off saves $9.00 and costs $36.00.
Stores in the US use percent-off sales constantly — Black Friday, back-to-school sales, clearance racks, and coupon codes are all built on this one calculation. The tricky part is comparing two deals: 40% off a $100 item saves $40 and costs $60, while 25% off a $70 item saves $17.50 and costs $52.50, so the second item is cheaper even though its discount percent is smaller. Always compare the final sale price, not just the percent.
Remember that the discount applies before sales tax. In most US states, tax is calculated on the discounted price, not the original price, so your total at the register will be the sale price plus tax. If your state charges 8% tax on a $60.00 sale price, you pay $4.80 in tax and $64.80 in total — not tax on the original $80.
Worked example
Chris in Dallas sees a pair of sneakers listed at $80 with a 25% off sale. He wants to know what he will actually pay before he adds them to his cart.
Step 1: Write down the original price — $80.00.
Step 2: Write down the discount — 25%.
Step 3: Find the savings: $80 × 0.25 = $20.00.
Step 4: Subtract the savings: $80.00 − $20.00 = $60.00.
That is the exact result this calculator gives for $80 at 25% off: a sale price of $60.00, with $20.00 saved. If Chris has a second coupon for an extra 10% off the sale price, that is a different calculation — 10% of $60 is $6, so the price would drop to $54 — because the second discount applies to the already-discounted price, not the original.
FAQ
What is 25% off $80?
25% off $80 is $60.00. You save $20.00, because 25% of $80 is $20, and $80 minus $20 is $60.
How do you calculate percent off?
Multiply the original price by the discount percent to find the savings, then subtract the savings from the original price. For example, 25% off $80: $80 × 0.25 = $20 saved, $80 − $20 = $60 sale price.
What is 50% off $80?
50% off $80 is $40.00. You save $40.00, which is half the original price.
Does percent off include sales tax?
No. The discount applies to the price before tax. Sales tax is calculated on the discounted sale price in most US states, so your final total at the register will be the sale price plus tax.
