How it works

JSON and CSV are two ways of writing the same table. JSON writes each row as an object with named keys, like {"name":"Ana","age":30}, while CSV writes the same table as plain lines separated by commas, with the first line naming the columns. This tool translates between the two without changing your data.

First, it parses your JSON. If the text is not valid JSON — a missing bracket, a trailing comma, or a single quote where JSON needs a double quote — it stops and shows the exact error message from the parser, so you can find and fix the mistake.

Second, it checks the shape. It needs an array of objects, because a CSV is a table and each object is one row. If you paste a single object, a list of plain numbers, or an empty array, it explains what is wrong instead of producing an empty file.

Third, it builds the header from every key it finds, in the order each key first appears, and writes one CSV line per object. Missing values become empty cells, and nested objects or arrays are written as compact JSON text inside the cell.

Header = all keys, in first-seen order  ·  Each object = one row  ·  Commas, quotes, and line breaks inside values are escaped with double quotes

Escaping matters. A value like Smith, John would break a CSV if it were written bare, because the comma would look like a column break. The tool wraps such values in double quotes, and doubles any quote inside a value — so Say "hi" becomes "Say ""hi""". That is the standard rule that Excel and Google Sheets expect, and it is why files from this tool open cleanly.

Worked example

Paste this JSON into the tool:

[{"name":"Ana","age":30},{"name":"Ben","age":25}]

Step 1: the parser reads a valid array with two objects. Step 2: the header is built from the keys, in first-seen order: name, age. Step 3: each object becomes one row — Ana’s row is Ana,30 and Ben’s row is Ben,25.

The full CSV output is:

name,age
Ana,30
Ben,25

That is a header plus two data rows, three lines in total. Click “Download CSV” and you get a file called converted.csv with exactly that content, ready to open in Excel. The sample button loads a slightly bigger example with four customers, including one whose city contains a comma, so you can see the quoting rule in action.

When to use a JSON to CSV converter

Developers use it to turn API responses into spreadsheets they can share with a non-technical team. A list of orders, customers, or products that comes back from an API as JSON becomes a CSV that anyone can sort and filter in Excel.

Shop owners and analysts use it the other way around in their workflow: export data from a tool as JSON, convert it here, and hand the CSV to an accountant or a manager who works in spreadsheets all day. Because the conversion never uploads your data, customer names and order totals stay on your own computer.

One caution: CSV has no data types, so a leading zero in a ZIP code like 02101 can disappear when Excel opens the file, because Excel reads it as the number 2101. If your data has ZIP codes, phone numbers, or IDs with leading zeros, import the CSV through Excel’s Text Import wizard and mark those columns as Text.

FAQ

What JSON format does the converter accept?

It accepts a JSON array of objects, such as [{“name”:“Ana”,“age”:30}]. Every object should have the same keys. A single object or a plain list of numbers will show a friendly error instead of a broken file.

How are commas and quotes inside values handled?

Values that contain a comma, a quote, or a line break are wrapped in double quotes, and any double quote inside a value is doubled. That is the standard CSV escaping rule, so Excel and Google Sheets open the file correctly.

What if my objects have different keys?

The converter builds the header from every key it finds across all objects, in the order they first appear. If one row is missing a key, that cell is left blank in the CSV.

Is my JSON uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your data never leaves your device, so you can safely convert customer lists, orders, and other private records.

How do I open the CSV in Excel?

Download the .csv file, then double-click it or open it from Excel with File, then Open. Excel splits the columns automatically. If you use Google Sheets, use File, then Import, and upload the CSV.
